The Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa) of the Business Administration Student Association (HMPS Administrasi Bisnis), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Diponegoro, organized a Business Model Canvas (BMC) training and Business Identification Number (NIB) registration assistance for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) on Saturday (4/7/2026), at the Banyumeneng Village Hall, Mranggen District, Demak Regency.
The program brought together lecturers from the Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Diponegoro and representatives of Department of Trade, Cooperatives, and SMEs (Dindagkop UKM) of Demak Regency as speakers, while the Village Head of Banyumeneng, Muhammad Ajib Wahyudi, supported the initiative as a key community partner. The program aimed to strengthen the managerial capacity and business legality of local MSMEs.
Banyumeneng Village possesses considerable economic potential, particularly through MSMEs engaged in processed food production, handicrafts, and retail businesses. Despite this potential, preliminary field observations conducted by the PPK Ormawa team revealed that many business owners still faced challenges in strategic business planning and legal compliance. In response to these findings, Banyumeneng Village was selected as the implementation site for a four-month community empowerment program involving three major business groups. The first phase of the program, which was attended by 30 MSME owners, was conducted on July 4, 2026.
The program focused on two key areas: business model development and business legality enhancement. The Business Model Canvas training was delivered by Rendy Ega Pradhana, M.A.B., a lecturer in the Business Administration Department at Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Diponegoro. Participants were introduced to the nine building blocks of the Business Model Canvas as a strategic framework for designing structured and sustainable business models. The second component addressed business legality through a socialization session and hands-on assistance in obtaining a Business Identification Number (NIB), facilitated by Rizal Prahardinta, S.M., an officer from Dindagkop UKM of Demak Regency.
The initiative was developed based on field observations indicating that most MSMEs in Banyumeneng Village had yet to adopt structured business planning practices, making their businesses more vulnerable to stagnation and long-term sustainability challenges. In addition, many entrepreneurs had not registered for an NIB due to limited understanding of the registration process. These issues restricted their access to formal financing, business partnerships, and further business certifications required to support future growth.
The program adopted a learning-by-doing approach that combined conceptual instruction with practical application. Participants developed their own Business Model Canvas tailored to their respective businesses under the guidance of the PPK Ormawa team. Each business model was then presented and discussed with the speakers to receive constructive feedback and recommendations. The following session focused on the importance of business legality, featuring an interactive discussion and step-by-step guidance on the NIB registration process through Indonesia’s Online Single Submission (OSS) system.
According to Rizal Prahardinta, S.M., an officer from the Dindagkop UKM of Demak Regency, “A Business Identification Number is like a birth certificate for business. If MSME owners intend to obtain halal certification, Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) approval, or a Home Industry Food Production Certificate (PIRT), the process must begin with an NIB.” His statement highlights that business legality extends beyond administrative compliance; it serves as the fundamental gateway to legal protection, business formalization, and broader opportunities for enterprise development.
The Banyumeneng Village initiative demonstrates that strengthening MSMEs requires more than improving product quality alone. Sustainable business growth also depends on strategic planning and strong legal foundations. Through the PPK Ormawa of HMPS Administrasi Bisnis of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Diponegoro program, Business Model Canvas training and Business Identification Number assistance have laid the groundwork for developing more structured, competitive, and sustainable MSMEs, while fostering stronger collaboration between universities, local government, and the community in supporting inclusive local economic development.
