SI NOMI 2026: TRANSFORMING SUNLIGHT INTO ARTWORK, THE TOUCH OF CYANOTYPE TECHNIQUE ON ARTISTIC TOTE BAGS AT MENEPILAH CAFE

Salatiga (09/05) – Si Nomi is an annual event organized by the Creative Economy Department of the Public Administration Student Association, Universitas Diponegoro. This event aims to ignite entrepreneurial spirit and creativity among Public Administration students, while also instilling values of sustainability and environmental awareness. This year, Si Nomi was held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, under the theme “Fostering Sustainable Growth: Getting to Know Nature, Creating Artworks, Building Businesses.” The event took place at Menepilah Cafe & Collaborative Space, located in Pulutan, Sidorejo District, Salatiga City, Central Java. The activity was attended by 57 participants, consisting of committee members and Public Administration students from FISIP Undip.

The main session of the event was delivered by representatives from Rintik Hujan Gang, a small creative enterprise focusing on producing creative products using environmentally friendly techniques, such as the cyanotype method, transforming them into economically valuable items like cyanotype tote bags. In their presentation, the Rintik Hujan Gang team explained that the design of the cyanotype tote bag was inspired by a photogram printing process that utilizes sunlight to produce a distinctive Prussian blue color. Through sustainable innovation, Rintik Hujan Gang promotes a transition from single-use plastic shopping bags to artistic fabric tote bags. The participants showed great enthusiasm during this session, actively engaging in discussions and asking questions. The event continued with a hands-on workshop on product creation, using a green ink solution applied to fabric tote bags, guided directly by the Rintik Hujan Gang team. Participants practiced together while foraging for plants around the cafe area. After the workshop session, participants sun-dried their tote bags.

Each participant took home their handmade creations as a tangible experience in managing environmentally friendly creative products with commercial value. The event concluded with the presentation of souvenirs to the Rintik Hujan Gang team as a token of appreciation, followed by a documentation session with all participants and committee members. Before returning to Semarang, all participants took a moment to rest and enjoy the mountain views surrounding the Menepilah Cafe area. The Si Nomi 2026 event served as a real reflection of how students can act as agents of change, not only in the field of entrepreneurship but also in preserving the environment by using eco-friendly materials. With a spirit of innovation, this event broadened participants’ perspectives on seeing creative economy opportunities as potential to be developed. It is hoped that this event will continue to inspire the younger generation to create sustainable businesses that have a positive impact on society at large.
